The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that a tragic multiple crash on the Ore-Benin Road resulted in the loss of 11 lives. In a statement released by the corps spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, it was disclosed that the fatal accident occurred at 9:04 a.m. on June 26, 2023, specifically on kilometer 20 of the OVIA BRIDGE in Edo State.
Nineteen individuals were involved in the multiple crash, including 10 adult males, eight adult females, and one female child. Tragically, the incident resulted in the loss of 11 lives, consisting of three adult females, seven adult males, and one female child. Additionally, eight individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The crash occurred with the involvement of three vehicles: a Dangote trailer at the rear, a Kia saloon car with registration number LSD553HY, which was sideswiped, and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number KET779AV at the front.
In response to the accident, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dauda Biu, emphasized the importance of drivers avoiding negligence when they observe mechanical faults in their vehicles. He also stressed the need for regular maintenance and routine checks on vehicles by drivers.
In order to prevent unnecessary road traffic accidents that can result in loss of life and property damage, Mr. Biu emphasized the importance of addressing mechanical deficiencies. According to the investigation conducted, the multiple crash was caused by a mechanical issue, specifically brake failure, which led to a loss of control.
The injured individuals were promptly taken to Saving Grace Hospital in Ovbiogie, Benin, Edo State, while the deceased were transferred to the mortuary at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
The Corps Marshal has instructed that a thorough technical investigation be carried out to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the crashes. This investigation aims to identify and prosecute any individuals found responsible for the accidents, ensuring the protection of the rights of the crash victims.
