“Igbo Lawyers Petition IGP, Call for Immediate Arrest of Asari Dokubo Over Alleged Threat”

The Igbo Lawyers Association (ILA), an umbrella organization of lawyers of Igbo origin, has called on the Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest and investigate former militant leader Asari Dokubo over his reported threat to wipe out the Igbo tribe. The ILA, during a meeting in Aba, Abia State, expressed its disappointment at the lack of appropriate action taken by the authorities regarding Dokubo’s inciting and ethnic remarks. In a letter addressed to the IGP, the ILA stated that Dokubo should not be allowed to roam freely after committing what it called a heinous crime against the Igbo people.

The ILA highlighted a video circulated online on June 23, 2023, in which Asari Dokubo was seen making threats against the Igbo race. The ILA argued that these threats violated the spirit of the anti-terrorism act and the cybercrime act of 2015. They expressed their concern that Dokubo had not been arrested or prosecuted despite the seriousness of his actions.

The ILA passionately called on the IGP to swiftly intervene, arrest Asari Dokubo, and initiate an investigation and possible prosecution. They emphasized the need for prompt action to ensure justice and prevent such issues from being ignored. The ILA urged the federal government to respect a court judgment and release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, emphasizing that it would contribute to lasting peace in the Southeast region of Nigeria.

The ILA concluded by stating that if the Inspector General of Police failed to arrest Asari Dokubo, they would file a suit of mandamus to compel the IGP to fulfill his duty. The ILA’s resolution reflects their commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and interests of the Igbo people.
