The Lagos State Government has taken a decisive stance to address environmental nuisances within the state by announcing comprehensive measures against establishments contributing to these issues. This significant step was revealed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a management meeting with key officials, including Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the recently appointed General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and other directors.
During the meeting, Mr. Wahab emphasized the importance of aligning LASEPA’s operational strategies with international best practices. He stressed the need for the agency to review its approaches and ensure strict compliance with globally accepted standards. In line with this objective, the commissioner issued a directive to the zonal directors and the monitoring and enforcement units of LASEPA. They were tasked with initiating advocacy efforts and implementing rigorous enforcement measures against public establishments that cause environmental nuisances across the state.
The scope of these measures is extensive, covering a range of establishments that have been identified as contributors to environmental disturbances. This includes bars, where noise pollution and other environmental disruptions often occur, as well as churches, clubs, mosques, and various companies. The decision to close down these establishments is grounded in the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management Protection Law, indicating the government’s commitment to upholding environmental standards and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
By taking these proactive steps, the Lagos State Government aims to create a cleaner, healthier, and more peaceful environment for its citizens.
