Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has revealed the reasons behind his non-reappointment as a minister during the second term of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. In an interview on Channels TV’s breakfast show, Dalung stated that his outspoken nature and direct approach in addressing issues, which he referred to as his “toxic tongue,” contributed to him not being reappointed.
Despite his claims of outstanding performance during his previous tenure from 2015 to 2019, Dalung believes that his willingness to confront powerful figures within the government led to his exclusion. He asserted that he had a record of performance that no one could challenge, but his outspokenness offended influential individuals within the corridors of power.
Dalung also spoke about the existence of “cabals” within the government, referring to ambitious groups of people with different agendas who aim to hijack power and promote their own interests. He cited an incident where a ministerial nominee from Kano State appeared on the list before being rejected at the National Assembly, suggesting the influence of such cabals.
Regarding future appointments, Dalung expressed his willingness to accept a ministerial position under President Bola Tinubu, but with conditions. He emphasized that he would only agree to serve if he could express his views freely without being silenced. He underscored that a ministerial appointment is meant to serve the country and should not be controlled or restricted by individuals, highlighting the importance of preserving his freedom of expression in any future role.
